Rock What Ya Got

Rock What Ya Got
Author: Samantha Berger
Rating: 4/5 Stars
Reviewer: Denise Z.

Summary: A child reminds everyone to embrace their own special something in this joyful expression of self-love. When a drawing of a little girl comes to life, she boldly declares that she doesn't want to be erased, or put into a picture that doesn't feel like her true self. Instead, she decides to speak up in a powerful way.

Review: With a catchy title and good message, I chose Rock What Ya Got by Samantha Berger to be December's Book of the Month. I liked how Viva didn't want to change despite her artist's thoughts at the beginning of the book. The rhyming text also made this book extra cute.

Messages of acceptance are always great for picture books and I thought this book was creative throughout using the perspective of a drawing and her artist. I could see using this book for a one-on-one discussion with a child about their self-esteem and it would also be beneficial for those little artists who tend to overly judge their work. For ages 4-7.

Summary: Have you ever wanted to be or help a Veterinarian? Come and help take care of all the different kinds of pets! Your little hands can help pet a cat or even feed a lizard! Be careful though because the lizards like to go CHOMP! CHOMP! CHOMP!

Review: This book has colorful and interactive illustrations that make the book come to life! The rhythmic wording makes it hard not to participate with the book. It is my favorite to read during storytimes and kids love to participate. I really enjoyed this book and it has become one of my favorite!

Summary: This First Facts series explains how Christmas is celebrated in other countries. In this book, we learn about Christmas traditions in Italy. The Italian language, Christianity, and other Italian Christmas facts are presented throughout the text. The Round Lake Library also has Christmas in Germany, Christmas in Norway, and Christmas in France available in the collection.

Review: This was a very interesting book to read and a wonderful way to have children learn about their cultures and other cultures that are unique to their own. Beautiful pictures and intriguing facts fill the book and are presented in an educated and fun way. A child can find out how similar or different their holiday traditions are at home from those in Italy. I enjoyed all the Italian vocabulary presented and also the holiday suggestions at the end of the book. Buon Natale…or Good Christmas to you!
